SUN CITY ---- In contrast to previous meetings on the potential for cityhood that were dominated by proponents, an anti-incorporation crowd held the floor at a Sun City restaurant Monday, where rallying cries for votes against the initiative warned of bankruptcy, tax increases and other woes.
About 100 people, most of whom were seniors, gathered at Boston Billie's restaurant to hear a discussion organized by the grass-roots Sun City-based group Citizens Against Cityhood. The speakers were Anne Pica and Ruth Goulet of the Citizens' group; Sun City resident Grant Yoders, who leads a local chapter of the Golden State Manufactured Homeowners League, and Glen Daniels, a Romoland activist and rancher.
On June 3, voters in Menifee, Sun City, Quail Valley and part of Romoland will consider whether they wish to become a city, transferring governance from the county Board of Supervisors to a five-member city council. On the ballot will be 19 candidates seeking a spot on the inaugural council, and there are also at least two write-in candidates. Voters will also be asked if they want the city to be called Menifee or Menifee Valley and if they want future city councils to be elected by district or at large.
